Edgar (Dermot Mulroney) is an artist living in Paris during the 1920s who believes that sex is a subject of vital importance, but almost no one discusses it with the gravity it deserves. With this in mind, Edgar gathers together a panel of fellow creative types at the home of a wealthy tycoon (Nick Nolte) and his oddly accented spouse (Tuesday Weld) for an evening in which they will discuss their erotic lives without self-serving wit or exaggeration. Joining Edgar for this experiment is an artist from Germany (Til Schweiger), an arrogant film director (Jeremy Davies), a self-obsessed painter (Alan Cumming) whose fey personality may cross the boundaries of Edgar's prohibition of homosexuality as a topic of conversation, and a student from England (Terrence Dashon Howard) who has attracted the eye of a lovely French girl (Julie Delpy) with whom Edgar has fallen in love. Certain that a number of profound thoughts will be shared with the group, Edgar hires a pair of stenographers to record the proceedings, but the presence of the two young and beautiful secretaries - innocent Alice (Neve Campbell) and provocative Zoe (Robin Tunney) -- has an unexpectedly strong effect on the group. Investigating Sex had its U.S. premiere as the closing night attraction of the 2001 Seattle Film Festival. ...Investigating Sex (2001) ( Intimate Affairs )

I always liked Neve Campbell, and Robyn Tunney, even Dermott Mulroney,The movie was nothing like I thought it would be.from the pic of the movie on amazon it looked like it was a bunch of grad students doing research on sex. A study that I am sure is done alot among grad students and there professors. However that was not the case here. There may have been two professors Dermott Mulroney and Nick Nolte and one of the participants was a former student of Dermott Mulroney. There were two transcribers, and artist, a photographer and some other people that we really don't know there professions. This movie looks like it was set in the 30's or 40's and it was filmed in London. When I watched this movie I was like oh man this is borning, I kept putting it on pause because it was so boring. I put it on pause to go do somthing else and then I would come back to it only to wonder why I was watching this movie. It really didn't have a good story line I mean sex always sparks someones interest but it was just so boring.I eventually turned it off and went about with my day and running errands. but then the next day I thought I paid for it I might as well finish watching it so I did and I am kinda glad I did the ending was funny I really enjoyed the ending the ending was what made the movie. If you really want to see this movie the best advice I can give anyone is hang in there it gets better. When it gets to the part where Robyn Tunny is doing Neve Campbells hair to get ready for the night session at the mansion (the night is stormy) thats when it gets better. It gets better before then actually. At the part where Robyn Tunney suggests to the photographer that the film the sessions at the mansion where they get together to talk about sex.The movie is what the title says, in a way. It is a group of guys sitting around and discussing some important questions about love and sex. They have a couple of good looking women as stenographers who are supposed to be an impetus to get the men thinking along the line that the research is supposed to do. Once the stenographers start participating in the discussion, the emphasis changes. How does a man discuss love and sex dispassionately with sexy ladies provocatively dressed listening and keep the discussion unpassionate (dispassionate does not have the right connotation) as well as keeping thoughts on the topic. It is like a stage play. The acting is sort of staid the time is early 1900's. The topics would be very risqué in that time. The music is as odd as the flavor of the film. I didn't notice bad language. There is a fair amount of nudity - mostly male - fuzzy images. There are some sex scenes. The film sort of seems to be a documentary in fictional clothes. The dialog was all important and pretty good. The setting was a small apartment, the front of a mansion, and a couple of rooms in the mansion. The characters were pretty complex. From the middle of the film to the end, I mostly listened while looking at other things. What was going on was not as interesting as what was said. Not good viewing for entertainment. Good viewing if you want something to think about.First I watch short piece somewhere and it looked promising, ok, four bucks dont break a bank. Mistake! Supposedly its 1929, some big house etc. Then it started--primitive, very unattractive females and men having nothing to do. A lot of paintings some not bad, sculptures in bad taste // yes, as its normal for americans they ignore Italian movies, for example Tinto Brass, with excellent sculptures and paintings etc // As movie was done recently I expected something fresh about human sexuality but alas. In addition everything is limited to a couple rooms in house which sure reminded me about french flick Education of Baroness--what a big difference. Four bucks out of window! For some reason, we lost the volume about 2/3 of the way through this movie. Had to reload it to hear the rest.Great cast, but confusing dialogue at times. Sexy scenes.this movie is way to boring to own if you want to see it i would rent it firstThis item arrived in three months in a damaged state: it fell from the fixing point and was moving in the case. A half of the film is interesting, and I am still intrigued what happened next.A good film and story but not as good as I thoughtJust a so so movie for me, and sometimes hard to follow.
