This is perhaps the hardest book I've ever read in my life. I have never had such little faith in humanity, or rather, I should say, modern, civilized humanity. Isn't civilization supposed to be putting an end to immoral savagery? The only reason I didn't give this book five stars is the unfortunate faulty logic of the author on two issues. The first, he argues for criminalizing prostitution, yes putting teenage girls in prison because they were forced into prostitution, but you can't prove they were forced because the accused have better lawyers. Sounds stupid to me. He mentions America's stance on criminalizing prostitution but forgets that Nevada HAS LEGAL PROSTITUTION! He doesn't even mention this while he does mention legal prostitution in the Netherlands. He argues that even in the Netherlands with legal prostitution, there is sex slavery, but he fails to see why. The Netherlands is simply not enforcing the regulation of prostitution by shutting down illegal operations. It's that simple. The problem is not the law but enforcement. You can shut down illegal operations using sex slavery and then by regulating legal operations, you can enter them and determine if workers are there voluntarily. You can't do this when prostitution is criminalized.Another example in his flawed thinking is arguing that poor Eastern European countries shouldn't be admitted into the EU, because it makes it easier to move sex slaves from the East to West. Um, yeah, but it also allows poor people in Eastern European countries the ability to easily move to the West to work instead of falling prey to scams where they get trapped into sex slavery. It's almost as if he argues, if the solution is not 100% perfect 100% of the time for 100% of the people, I reject it! It reminds me of the idiotic saying, "You can't please all the people all the time." Well, no s- Sherlock, nobody was even trying to do that. You make things better incrementally for a few people. Many people in Eastern European countries are better off after joining the EU and many have avoided sex slavery, because their poor countries are now part of the EU. It won't stop all of them from falling prey, but it has made a huge positive impact.Decriminalize prostitution, start enforcing sex trafficking and sex slavery laws, create much stiffer penalties, and you will make a huge dent into the problem. It would also help if First World countries would stop exploiting and impoverishing poor countries. The only reason sex slavery is tolerated so much is that those in power are rich because they have virtually enslaved their workers with wages so low they can't save up, they're constantly in debt, and they have no choice but to remain working in minimum wage jobs. Why outlaw slavery, when the next thing people would start clamoring for is outlawing low-paying work.
