I had a great time working on these cute little ornaments. The designs are great -- challenging for a novice but totally do-able. This project forced me to learn how to baste stitch and do a French knot. I bought these back in October, and worked on them pretty much every weeknight for two months (a more experienced cross-stitcher could certainly complete this more quickly, but again, I am quite new to this) so that I could give them to my friends at work for the holidays. Unfortunately, once I had completed the designs, it turned out that the fabric in the package was just a little too small to allow me to spread the designs out far enough that they could be cut into actual ornaments. I measured, I trimmed, I tried to make do, but while my completed cross stitches look lovely, I couldn't turn these into ornaments worth giving. Certainly not worth giving to my colleagues who I value and respect so much. They put up with a lot of crap, and deserve much better than a lopsided, half-stuffed, A-for-Effort craft. Imagine my despair when, two days before I planned on gifting these ornaments, I discovered my two months worth of effort were all for naught! I pouted, I beat myself up, I had a nightmare that the Superintendent caught me trying to fix the ornaments and told me to make more -- one to give to every Indian-American resident in the county. I made panicked trips to the store to buy actual presents.I bemoaned that I hadn't the skill to make the ornaments with polish worth of my dear friends, but I keep going back to the instructions, and then to the fabric, and they just don't quite match up. All I can do is forgive myself, and hope that Lindsey, Matt, Suzanne, Don, Hazel and Irina can find some way to move past their disappointment every time they notice a gap on their Christmas tree that would be just perfect for a cross-stitched ornament made with love.TL;DR: 5 stars for designs, 1 star for asking me to break the rules of Euclidean geometry, 3 stars for the journey to self-forgiveness and serenity = 2 stars overall.Friendship: 5 stars.
