This toy fascinates me. It's such a brilliant idea. And if your playroom is full of Fisher Price and Vtech toys that get used and tossed aside by your children or grandchildren, then this is the toy for them. There's truly nothing like it.- It has three settings: Classical, World and a sort of jazzy/big band option. I'm particularly impressed that the music is fantastic!- Every setting offers all sorts of instrumentals as well as vocals.- This isn't annoying music like most toys - the only thing comparable would be the Baby Einstein toys with their great music options, but this is better because there are an incredible number of combinations to create your own variations of the music - your child literally composes the music by rearranging and repositioning each block.- My toddler son (16 months) is still figuring it out and delights himself when we creates a song with the blocks. He loves music and he's amazed when we play with it together, but I'd give him three more months before he's regularly playing with it all by himself. Still, we have so, SO much fun with this.- It's educational -- It's a great way for a very young child to see cause and effect as they rearrange the blocks and the music changes.- It's so unique. We have rooms full of toys that we've bought over the years or received as presents and this one is in a league of its own. It's ingenious.FYI: Brookstone was selling this toy for close to $100. I bought it on Amazon for less than $50. I would buy this again and I'd recommend it to EVERY parent -- I can't even put an age limit on it, because I loved it so much as an adult.I think this toy is a neat idea, but I wanted to post a review because I saw a lot of prior reviewers mentioning buying this for their 1-year-old. My 1-year-old does not "get" this toy at all, and I think it's probably much better for the preschool set. I purchased this as my daughter's main Christmas gift (since it's pretty pricey) so I'm a little disappointed that we can't use it but I hope that we can get use out of it in a few years. I had to put it away because my 14-month-old just likes to bang the blocks together, and I don't want her to break them LOL.This is a new and improved version of a toy both my children enjoyed immensely when we lived in England. The improved is that it now includes 3 settings of song (classical, jazz and jungle beat). The music blocks encourage creativity (you can combine a variety of "instruments" in any sequence), provide instant gratification (every combination makes a song), and can keep even the least focused children busy. I bought it for my friend's son, who is on the go from dawn till dusk, and I understand it's the first thing he wants to play with every day!I like this toy but liked the older version better. It had cartridges so was more expandable and kids didn't get bored with it as quickly. Still a good toy with lots of options. I use it for a therapy tool and it is good for matching, color recognition and shape identification. We borrowed the old version of the toy from a neighbor and my daughter (and her parents) liked it so much, we decided to order our own. The new version is not nearly as good as the old. It is more the quality of the sound that bothers me than the lack of cassettes. The sound quality is terrible. Also, I like the Mozart night music but the jazz and African music is not as good in my opinion. I wouldn't have ordered this had I known how different it was from the old version of the toy that we liked so much. The idea of the toy is so fun though. Just wish they could improve the model. We had this toy ten years ago and loved it ! The sound was fabulous. This newer model sounds tinny and cheap in comparison.I gave this five stars because I purchased one before for a now much older grandchild. The one I just purchased is for my 19 month old granddaughter and is a Christmas gift. I expect she will love it. Of all the gifts I have given to grandchildren, I consider this the best.Beware. There are several versions of this product. The description on Amazon is misleading. The new version of the music blocks, which most amazon sellers will be carrying, has Mozart, jazz, and world music hardware for your music selection. It is NOT compatible with any of the cartridges to select alternative music selections. The product description is not correct. If you want this option, you need to find a seller of the older model or be prepared to do a lot of returns of models and cartridges. If you are happy with the three music selection in the built in hardware, the product has won several toy awards and I am sure is wonderful. The new model I have I will say is not digital CD quality, however. It is equitable to most children toys, so a little disappointed as I expected a toy focused on music would have better quality.
