The only book I have read on the subject that included baseball, pizza and play dough as well as great information in a relaxed conversational style!I have read many books on this topic while doing research for my word search game book Modern Teens Talk: Puberty and Growing Up and found this book to be a wonderful resource that offers facts, ideas, examples, stories, and resources in a warmly conversational tone that makes it both inviting and informative. As a health care professional teaching both clients and the workforce I found that word search games were very helpful in introducing words, stimulating reflection and self- expression, and starting conversations ( especially those that seem difficult to start- such as talks about puberty and growing up). I even found that in my personal life, people I know who have pre- puberty and puberty age kids had not talked, were struggling to talk, felt shy, embarrassed, confused, and threatened, and I came to realize that parents could benefit from support. With so many books available, how do we know what and how to choose? Trial and error can be frustrating and ultimately costly, and so many of us look forward to reviews to help us find our way- I always read reviews before buying anything, so I am hoping that my experience can help in some small way.Reading this book was like sitting down with an educated, informed kind, gentle, humorous friend who was willing to connect and share knowledge, experiences, suggestions, and opinions in a warm and engaging way. I was relieved that it was not written as a textbook with facts to memorize and regurgitate but rather in a positive and conversational tone- talking to me/us personally.I have now read it three times (chapter 3 was one of my favorites-no spoiler alert here) as I continue to work on my word search games. Each time I re-read it, I am reminded about the author’s healthy, positive attitude and approach, and each time I learn more and feel as if I would like to go back to school to become a sex educator and follow in his footsteps, hoping to be as good at what I do as he is.I was so impressed that I emailed him with my impressions and was shocked that the email did not go into some author’s black hole- I actually received a personal response that reflected the humanity evident in his writing. He was interested in what I had to say, and I imagined how lucky his students must be to have him in their lives helping navigate these important and delicate waters.I wish this had been available when I was growing up (or at least was younger), but even at my age of 72, I can appreciate the positive approach to sexuality in my own life.Buy it, devour it, use it, and relish it. It is a game and life changer. I think you and your kids will be glad you did!
