I am reviewing this just days after the Philadelphia conviction of the priest who used the "Nazi Defense" of "I was only following orders". The diocese put out a statement afterward along the lines of "we've been dealing with this relatively recent tragedy and will continue to deal with it". I had just finished reading this compelling book. I had once been a student in Philadelphia's Catholic School System. So, WOW. This book shows, through Church documents, dating back centuries, that this is no "recent" tragedy, and that they have been woefully unsuccessful in dealing with it. This was the most comprehensive book I have ever read on the Church priest-sex scandal, and highly recommend it to anyone who wants to understand some or all of the complex issues. The Vatican, to me, has become just one more corrupt country, and not the head of the largest church in the world. Just a bunch of power-hungry men. Sad. Destroying the lives of innocent children. Criminal.
